     for wind symphony

This was a piece that I was compelled to write.  Although struggle and individuality are hallmarks of the human condition that we all must confront, someone very close to me has had to suffer greatly, simply for daring to be who they are and doing the right thing.

This piece begins in a dark, mysterious world, out of which a solitary flute emerges.  The flute’s musical language contrasts with the world around them.  They struggle to present their identity, and seem to be supported by the other woodwinds.  Then a clash ensues that eventually pits the single flute against the entire ensemble.  My fervent prayer is that, eventually, the individual who inspired this piece will find harmony with the world around them – not by giving up, but by enduring until the rest of the world can see how wonderful they truly are.
