Seeking the Intangible     2007

     for solo clarinet

While I was writing this piece I was detached and separated from it, like an actress portraying a character, but over time the piece began to steal from my personality until it became a representation of a part of myself.  At first I thought the lingering quality and sense of searching-and-never-arriving that this piece has were representative of the uncertainty and anticipation during my first semester in college.  The experience of daily revising the same dynamic markings and articulations suggested to me that the piece was really a depiction of my own indecisiveness.  There is a sense of contented languor and restless yearning throughout.

Excerpt performed by Walter Hyde.
