The heavens declare    2013

     for soprano and wind symphony

I love working with text and different instrumental colors. I chose the text based on the images and messages in these verses, placed together to outline a basic description of the relationship between God and man. This relationship is further highlighted by the relationship between the soprano and the ensemble. When the text becomes more self-centered, solos and fewer voices play with the soprano.  The entire ensemble begins and ends the piece with rejoicing. It was a special challenge to balace the strength and variety of the wind symphony in a way that did not overpower the soprano, enabling her to shine while celebrating the wind symphony’s diverse strengths. I was able to explore many different, wonderful colors, both through different instruments and in different parts of the soprano’s range.
