     for violin and piano

During the summer ’09 in Germany I spent one week working at the International Music Academy in Meissen, Germany for the Szymon Goldberg Award, an international youth violin competition.  I heard 8-year-olds do things I would have been impressed hearing a 20-year-old doing.  What struck me the most was that, as technically advanced as these students were, the winners were often also the most emotional performers (no surprise there).  With that in mind, I wanted to write a piece requiring an emotional depth from the performer that also possessed a few technical challenges.  I also explored the relationship between the violin and piano, and really pushed the violinist to be aware of how they can  relate to their instrument, the piano, and the music.
